Creating organized thought through the engineering of ideas within symbols and icons established in SVT...

[edit] Visualisation

See Also Visualism

Our approach combines a visual interpretation of conversation with structures that force decision making. Leading to clarity of strategy and direction. We apply visualisation because we know it overcomes disagreement, uncertainty and the semantics caused by differences of opinion over intangible concepts.

  • The Decisions Contract. Structured. Visual. Thinking. Three critical words to describe our definition of Visualisation. For us the drawing is all about making sharply correct decisions in fluid real time at a wall of approximate size 35feet x 8 feet. It is crucial to know what to write or draw, when and where to draw them and within which module to draw them. It is vital to know that what to draw represents the thought or idea being generated and tat it is warranted by the aggregate view of the audience and the facilitator. There is a contract of this clarity 1. Between the Contextual Analyst and the written record – 2. Between the SVT™ Engineer and what goes on the wall and 3. Between the facilitator and the ‘Decisions’ that cause the experience to be a valid one of emergent decision making, sense making and framework development.
  • Interpretation & The Committing Contract. The agreement of what word and what icon at what time by which means or lead facilitator. Deciding who leads.
  • The Ergonomics & Relationships of the Defined Rhythm of a framework. Of paramount importance (and at least 2 hours, probably 3) is preparing the skeletal framework ahead of anyone else getting into the room. Planning. White space and the intangibles of pure space and pure structure. When, which modules and how to create complex scenarios. Using the space and time outside the facilitation (ie during breaks) vs what to focus on in the heat of the battle.
  • Engineering & Precision. Understanding clear and measured machine tooling of the text, the text boxes, the icons and the symbols within the main modules of 4D
  • Brand. Group Partners reputation is based on quality standards at every level and across each of the main disciplines. Facilitation, Contextual Analysis, Decision Quality, Information Design and Visualisation.
  • SVT™.' The visualisation is known specifically as Structured Visual ThinkingSVT and therefore it's important to go to school on it. It has a very distinct look and feel, using specific symbols within a ‘style’ that is built from important raw materials.

  1. Listening, meaning making and translation of decisions over ‘marks’
  2. Typestyle and clarity of wording
  3. Deliberate and steady execution of the vertical line and horizontal line structures
  4. Primary colors and their combinations to build integration and holism
  5. The icon library linked to back office systems and register – knowledge and fluency of the archive
  6. Relationship and use of space and white space
  7. Preparation, preparation and preparation
  8. SVT™ is not about proving any art school technique

[edit] Principles for SVT™ Visualisation

These are the principles that apply to anyone wanting to apply SVT™. Anyone wanting to do this work to support a facilitator and in front of a client of Group Partners is going to have to learn how to represent SVT and 4D, our approach, the object classes and so on. I have then scored this test against the following criteria. It is going to sound very hard but these are basic to good graphic design and adherence to guideline levels of governance.

[edit] Structured Principles - Engineer

  • Basic knowledge of design, layout and aesthetics
  • Basic observation of rules, classes and guidance
  • Understanding the form and function of any object and its meaning to the audience within the overall piece
  • Conveying the primary essence of a discussion point as an observable unit of meaning in the overall framework
  • An understanding and recognition of the alphanumeric coding
  • An understanding of the connectivity and relationships between closely assembled objects and units
  • An appreciation of space, layout and hierarchical organization of the icons within a given space
  • Knowledge of and appreciation for the white space within relationships and the area of work
  • An appreciation of tables, ladders and grid formations within the frameworks and their relative proportions and importance
  • An appreciation and application of font sizes. Illustration of headlines, primary and secondary word boxes and narrative
  • An appreciation of relationships between the type and font used with the related icon/symbol or unit
  • An understanding of the central (framework architecture) focal point to cope with audience distance observation/meaning
  • Use of boxes around words and related ‘worms’
  • Knowledge of the structures of 4D™

[edit] Visual Principles - Interpret

  • Ability to draw in 2 and 3 dimensions
  • Observation and interpretation of Group Partners examples provided in advance
  • Choice of drawing media (use of tool) sharpness of ink, use of the brand colors and quality of drawing technique
  • Choice of perspective rules, distance clues and basic form and format
  • Clarity of type, handwriting and visibility (critical for groups following the dialogue)
  • Alignment with the vertical and the horizontal in every application. Text especially (critical for groups following the dialogue)
  • Straightforward and standard application of text to aid distance observation and inclusion of the audience (critical for groups following the dialogue)
  • Use of size and relationship of pen and line form (critical for groups following the dialogue)
  • Appreciation of the ‘flourish’ and single pen stroke to create objects at speed
  • Appreciation of bold and normal type
  • Appreciation of italic and lower case type
  • Knowledge of the symbol library for back office support (recognition) and Business Objects
  • Understanding how to create shadow with single line
  • Understanding how to connect words with images

  • Listening skills
  • Creativity skills
  • Writing a pithy summary sentence
  • Knowing about hierarchy and architectural priority and sequencing of importance
  • Ability to tell a story and sequence within a scenario and subsequent to the session
  • Creation of re-useable and stand alone components of meaning within the overall scenario
  • Creating structures for intelligent inference, reasoning, team processing and decision quality.
